What do people do for work in northern New Hampshire?
Industries, family business, education and tourism help a community grow and survive. Describe the types of jobs and careers in this area. Are there any jobs that you think are unique to northern New Hampshire?
In Northern New Hampshire there isn't a big variety of jobs. There are jobs such as working at a hotel, store, restaurant, or gas station. But no really big industry jobs up around here, I would say the biggest company up in the White Mountains is logging. KG
The jobs in the white mountains aren't that different from the jobs anywhere else. A lot of people do open their own buisness or work at local shops or cafes. A lot of people work at the hospital and people work at schools. We don't really have any unique jobs in the White Mountains. If working at a ski mountain or resort is unique then that is really the most unique jobs we have. MB
Northern NH is way to small, and has very little job opportunities. You can be a logger, or work at a local store, market, or hospital. That's about it.
We're a pretty small town, if you like to be outdoors then this is probably the perfect place for you to work. In the winter, you have the mountain, plow some roads perhaps? Waitressing is there as well. In the summer a big option for people my age would be Clark's Trading Post. -POR
Well, I would say that about 1 in 2 families has a person that works at Garnet Hill, in Franconia. Everyone in Lisbon (pretty much) works at the Wire Mill. There's a lot of small business around here, that keep the community going. JK
A comment I have heard about industry in the White Mountains is that people here tend to have "lots of time and not much money." What that means to me is that people are very crafty and creative and do things for themselves. Many people have a garden, can knit and quilt, heat their homes through hard work with an ax and raise animals like chickens, goats or cows. I love this about this area, it connects us with the land.
Logging and plowing are the jobs to have in Northern New Hampshire. A unique Northern job is owning a blueberry patch and letting people pay to pick a basketful. ES
Although there is a lot of land around Northern New Hampshire, but there is not a lot of jobs. In the past I have worked at Miller's Cafe and Bakery in Littleton. I loved working there! Presently I am a Rec. counselor in Bethlehem after school. I am planning on doing that this summer as well as waitressing.
There are many organic farms located in the north country. The beautiful landscapes cater to the plants nutritional needs. However, just about every high school student works at Shaws. jt
Alot of people in the White Mountains, usually find jobs at small stores and shops due to the fact we are no where near a "city-like" area. Alot of people work in the health field or Garnett Hill. HA
The job selection in the White Mountains is slim. Farming is a booming business, also they are many people who enjoy sugaring and apple, pumpkin, blueberry, and many other farms are very common to go picking. JY
In Northern New Hampshire, I babysit-ted two kids who are 8 and 11 years. I could not do anything because I am an exchange student. The main jobs are in the hotels or in the restaurants. But the winter doesn't allow people to do so many other jobs. CD
I'm working for one of the Rec. camps over the summer and my boss doesn't even have me working a whole week. There's really not the much to do up here at all when you're in like 9th or 10th grade. BG
For the outdoorsmen, there are plenty of job oppertunities, like logging, etc. But for others, ou must either work at a small business, like a gas station, family owned business, etc, or be a teacher:) sbah
Northern New Hampshire has a different kind of work environment. If you're not employed by one of the many hotels and resorts, you're probably in the back woods cutting down trees. ~S.S
Job selections in the White Moutains are limited but many jobs can be found working outdoors, with the changing seasons! I think hiking, skiing, or rockclimbing guides are unque to our area because of the difference in seasonal weather and the variety of outdoor activities we have here. -EV
Some of the jobs around here are farming, logging, working in restaurants and in hotels. A lot of people also work at places like Santa's Village and Six Gun City. MG
The job selection is pretty limited to only a few career clusters. For instance, there is a hospital in Lancaster, and many residents work there. Any building/business built in a town up here quickly becomes one of the main job sources. There are also many farms that people work on for their living. One unique job would be being a maple sugarer. -KNS
theres a lot more opportunity up here for jobs that deal with farming or snow. one good thng about the snow is that you can get a job as a ski or snowboard instructor. plus you can start a business such as growing crops or apples or growing animals for food. or my favorite you could own a sugar shack and make your own maple sugar. CS
Garnet Hill is the big business in Franconia, New Hampshire. Many families move here just so the parents can work for this great company. Teenagers, however, work in less properous industries. Many people my age work at Shaw's. Not an ideal place, but still a money maker.
Due to the low population of the north country there are not that many different types of jobs. There is the typical personally/family owned businesses, there are larger companies such as Garnet Hill, there are a large amount of hotels in the area, so hotel managment is a large job field, and teaching jobs are available at the local schools. Jobs that would be unique to this area though are working on a ski mountain in maintenance or running the mountain in general, but also farming is quite unique to the north country as well. Also, working for places such as the AMC and trail maintenance are quite unique to this are as well, and many of the jobs around the area deal with the outdoors.
Well, lets start with Ganett Hill. Everybody knows at least ten people who work for Garnett Hill, or have worked for Garnett Hill. If you don't work for Garnett Hill then you are one of three things. You are either a teacher, you work in the construction industry, or you work in the tourism industry. if thats not you, for the most part, you are unemployed. CJS
In the winter it is impossible not to know someone who works at a ski area, most commonly Cannon or Bretton Woods. People here do it for work, but also for their love to ski. MN
There are many small places where people work in the area. Many people work at the schools and get to know everyone. There are many small food places that people hang out at and just talk to the people who work there. DB
A lot of people work at Garnet Hill. Although, I think everyone knows someone who works at Cannon or Bretton Woods. There are different jobs all around the area.
People can go swimming, hunt, fish, ride bikes there are many mountain bike trails around here. In the winter you can go sleding or skiing or even just stay worm inside........RB
Where I live there is not alot of jobs. Basically the only jobs are mailman, teacher, librarian, mini grocery store worker. Thats about it for where I live.
There not a lot of jobs around here but during the summer you can work construction or at whales Tale and during the winter you can do things like work at one of the ski mountains around or plow when there is snow. BW
Adults work at hotels, garnet hill, and do logging. Some people work at the mountains, shaws, and walmart; even though they are more teen oriented jobs. -KS
If you mean Bethlehem then practically nothing. You could possibly work at the village store or Rosa Flamingos or something. If you count nearby towns too then you could always be lame and work at fast food joints or Shaw's. I swear half of Profile works at Shaw's.
In the North Country there may seem to be not many jobs, but that is not the truth. Jobs in the North Country range in many ways. One may wake up in the morning to travel 2 hours down to boston to work in a cubical office all day or one may way wake up to spend a beautiful day outside harvesting Christmas trees. The job offers in the North Country may be similar or vastly different.
Places to work here would be, restaurants, amusement parks, hotels, working for the national parks, tourist attractions, doctors, teachers, ski coaches, -Madison
In the local area many of the stores are small family owned businesses. There aren't very many big stores, our economy is mainly based on the small family owned stores.
My dad doesn't actually work in New Hampshire he works in mass. But what A lot of my friends parents actually own small stores or they are construction workers. JR
In the North Country there are many different types of jobs, just like any where else, we have carpenters, store clerks, teachers, and doctors.
