What do people do for work in northern New Hampshire?

Industries, family business, education and tourism help a community grow and survive. Describe the types of jobs and careers in this area. Are there any jobs that you think are unique to northern New Hampshire?

  1. In Northern New Hampshire there isn't a big variety of jobs. There are jobs such as working at a hotel, store, restaurant, or gas station. But no really big industry jobs up around here, I would say the biggest company up in the White Mountains is logging. KG

  2. KG said there aren't A variety of jobs and she is right. A Lot of people are loggers in northern NH. Also people are surveyors.

  3. A lot of people up here either start their own buissness, work at a Garnet Hill, or a logger.

  5. The jobs in the white mountains aren't that different from the jobs anywhere else. A lot of people do open their own buisness or work at local shops or cafes. A lot of people work at the hospital and people work at schools. We don't really have any unique jobs in the White Mountains. If working at a ski mountain or resort is unique then that is really the most unique jobs we have. MB

  6. ummmmmmmm, there really isn't a ton to do; but you can work at a ski area, resteraunt, tourist attraction, or just work in the woods.

  7. Northern NH is way to small, and has very little job opportunities. You can be a logger, or work at a local store, market, or hospital. That's about it.

  8. We're a pretty small town, if you like to be outdoors then this is probably the perfect place for you to work. In the winter, you have the mountain, plow some roads perhaps? Waitressing is there as well. In the summer a big option for people my age would be Clark's Trading Post. -POR

  11. Well, I would say that about 1 in 2 families has a person that works at Garnet Hill, in Franconia. Everyone in Lisbon (pretty much) works at the Wire Mill. There's a lot of small business around here, that keep the community going. JK

  14. A comment I have heard about industry in the White Mountains is that people here tend to have "lots of time and not much money." What that means to me is that people are very crafty and creative and do things for themselves. Many people have a garden, can knit and quilt, heat their homes through hard work with an ax and raise animals like chickens, goats or cows. I love this about this area, it connects us with the land.

  16. Logging and plowing are the jobs to have in Northern New Hampshire. A unique Northern job is owning a blueberry patch and letting people pay to pick a basketful. ES

  17. Although there is a lot of land around Northern New Hampshire, but there is not a lot of jobs. In the past I have worked at Miller's Cafe and Bakery in Littleton. I loved working there! Presently I am a Rec. counselor in Bethlehem after school. I am planning on doing that this summer as well as waitressing.

  18. There are many organic farms located in the north country. The beautiful landscapes cater to the plants nutritional needs. However, just about every high school student works at Shaws. jt

  19. Alot of people in the White Mountains, usually find jobs at small stores and shops due to the fact we are no where near a "city-like" area. Alot of people work in the health field or Garnett Hill. HA

  20. The job selection in the White Mountains is slim. Farming is a booming business, also they are many people who enjoy sugaring and apple, pumpkin, blueberry, and many other farms are very common to go picking. JY

  31. The job selection is pretty limited to only a few career clusters. For instance, there is a hospital in Lancaster, and many residents work there. Any building/business built in a town up here quickly becomes one of the main job sources. There are also many farms that people work on for their living. One unique job would be being a maple sugarer.

  49. Garnet Hill is the big business in Franconia, New Hampshire. Many families move here just so the parents can work for this great company. Teenagers, however, work in less properous industries. Many people my age work at Shaw's. Not an ideal place, but still a money maker.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Due to the low population of the north country there are not that many different types of jobs. There is the typical personally/family owned businesses, there are larger companies such as Garnet Hill, there are a large amount of hotels in the area, so hotel managment is a large job field, and teaching jobs are available at the local schools. Jobs that would be unique to this area though are working on a ski mountain in maintenance or running the mountain in general, but also farming is quite unique to the north country as well. Also, working for places such as the AMC and trail maintenance are quite unique to this are as well, and many of the jobs around the area deal with the outdoors.
